Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a high point of cinematic storytelling, with many agreeing that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign is vastly superior to that of its sequel, having focused a small cast of characters who felt a part of the narrative, such as freedom fighter Farah and eternally cheeky British Captain John Price.
With memorable missions such as Clean House, Piccadilly, and Highway of Death, it’s easy to see why, even three years after release, many fans are still talking about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign, and while I would not go as far as to say it is the best Call of Duty campaign ever, I would easily rank it in the top 3 best campaigns of all time, with only Black Ops 2 and Infinite Warfare surpassing it.
Call of Duty titles rarely see much content in year 2; however, Infinity Ward has been deliberately cryptic when asked about their plans for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, with a developer stating in late 2020 that there was more to come, but they were not free to say exactly what that content would be.
Many in the community are aware that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was supposed to have received a 7th and final season; unfortunately, this season and its content were cancelled in favour of a united progression system for all Call of Duty titles going forward, a smart move for the franchise, and a beneficial one for the players, however, it was bittersweet for fans of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, whose dreams of a 7th season were crushed.
Many in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare community feared the planned season 7 content was lost forever; thankfully, this was not the case, and two new maps, Al-Raab Airbase (6v6) and Drainage (Gunfight) and a new Operator (Soap), were released in 2021.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign is part one of a three-part story, with parts 1 and 2 having been released in 2019 and 2020, respectively; as of August 2022, there has been no sign of part 3, despite many insiders claiming they have heard it has been complete since early 2020 and is simply waiting for the go-ahead from Activision to release.
Despite releasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Campaign Remastered in 202o, Activision opted to release yet another version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2022, which continues the story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), and rendering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Campaign Remastered non-canon, greatly diminishing the chances of receiving a remaster of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 anytime soon.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the best-looking Call of Duty to date, with most in the community agreeing that it is visually superior to Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, which utilises an older iteration of the IW engine, developed in 2015.
